is there a way to exclude certain extensions or binary files generally from the 'Open File By Name' search function?
Right now i get a hole bunch of images in the list and i have to type almost the whole filename....

probably we'd do this by default as opening an image by name is not what you need anyway.
As sort of workaround, try to add *.php at the end of the name you started typing. It will filter out all non-php files.
