I did a stupid git command and lost all my work since my last commit. Specifically the following
Code:
git checkout xxx .

My research has lead me to believe that I am screwed from a git perspective but am hoping for salvation since all word was done via phped via a samba shared drive. Any chance there is recovery?

you lost files if you checked out over uncommitted changes.
PhpED does backup files only if "Create backup files" option is enabled in Tools->settings->IDE settings. In this case each time you save file (via File->Save for example), it renames old file by appending tilda (~) to the end of file name.
