This is not really causing anything nasty other than incorrect output.

Connect to postgres in DB Client - Open a database, then a table, then fields - all field lengths shown are correct
Right click on a table select details, all field lengths are shown correctly.
Right click on a field select details, char and varchar fields show length + 4 in the type column.

It's just cosmetic nothing destructive...

I don't know if this occurs with mysql or other db servers as well perhaps others can check and provide feedback.
