I am sure this used to work in version 5, but in 6 it doesn't. I have to right-mouse and click cut.

Looks like you turned off Overwrite Blocks in Tools->Settings->Editor Settings
We didn't change the editor functionality in this regard and the option is ON by default since the beginning, so... |

I had no recollection of doing so, but I checked anyway and the setting is checked, so it can't be that.

Then you probably checked Persistent Blocks. Try [Reset] button below the editor settings
