Isn't this just dynamic highlighting that was disabled before and is enabled now (or vice versa)? Checkout the View menu.
What this does when enabled is basically put everything from a different language than the one your cursor is in in a "gray" color. It will update to the new syntax coloring for each part of text you click in.
