I have ran into this "problem". It's actually most likely because your are editing in "insert" mode.
When it happens, try hitting the insert key on your keyboard to get out of insert mode, then all should be fine.
You should also notice that while in this mode, typing before any existing text overrides it, instead of moving it over.
The problem I seem to have is I don't know how I keep accidently hitting insert, i'm not entirely convinced that I am hitting it either.
(Although, I do use insert, delete, home, end, and pgup/pgdown alot, so accidently hitting it is definitely possible with me.).
I wish there was a option/setting "never allow insert mode".

AFAIK, There is no indicator visually in the editor that shows insert or normal typing status.
