is it possible to keep a ssh session open when switching between workspaces?

i do have single workspaces per customer, but a lot of the customers reside on the same server. When opening a SSH session when working for a customer and then choosing another workspace (customer) my SSH session exits and i have to start a new one (to the same server again; with the same account).
