Go ahead and ask your developers, managers like you sucks.
PhpED is very nice IDE, it has _remote_ debugger (ask your guys what it is or RTFM), stable and has responsible support. And is not bundled with proprietary crap like other IDE's doing (Spry framework in Dreamweaver, Zend framework in Zend Studio). After 2 weeks of comparing and 1 week of PhpED testing i decided to buy license and replace warez key with a cool one Last but not least: price PS. Damn Dreamweaver costs 570 € in EU and it's not possible to buy it direkt from USA store for $399 |

Hey Jacques,
I have and use Dreamweaver, Zend Studio 5.5, and phpEd. I've tested about 7 or more IDEs in the last month, including: Eclipse for PHP Komodo Zend Studio w/ Eclipse phpEd plus any other IDEs recommended on this page that had trial or free versions: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/os-php-ide/index.html AND all PHP IDEs that seemed to have potential from sourceforge. From all of that testing, my conclusion is that phpEd is the best all-around application for my own personal requirements...so I bought it about a week ago. I think it still has some short-comings. It doesn't handle phpDoc Blocks as well as Zend Studio, and it doesn't handle local/remote "views" quite as well as Dreamweaver does...but it does both to some extent which is better than I can say for either of the other two applications on their own. Dreamweaver isn't an IDE, and Zend Studio pretty much forces you to EITHER work remotely or locally, but won't do both. If you aren't particular about having both local and remote versions...or don't mind doing all your work locally and then uploading with a different application...then you probably have more IDEs that would suit your needs. check out that link I posted above for an article talking about "7 Great IDEs", which lists phpEd as one of them, and said that these were the stand-out features for phpEd: "Standout features of PhpED include a great debugger, excellent database access, good code intelligence features, and integrated PHP help." However, as of right now, it looks like phpEd is only for Windows...since you said you need it to run on Linux, you may want to look into Eclipse (open source), Komodo (commercial), or Zend Studio (commercial). Unfortunately, I can't really give you any tips on obfuscation or debugging as I haven't tested much in that department...the only debugger that I'm really familiar with is Visual Studio for ASP.NET...I don't need a debugger much for PHP. However, I'm guessing that you're pretty safe with the debuggers for either Zend or phpEd, as I've heard good things about both. Kevin |
