I'm trying to understand mappings.

If I am running a server on my local machine, do I need to have a duplicate of the code and use mappings??

Or can I simply use the server root (htdocs) as my project root and edit the files directly?? ( <--- this is what I am doing now & it seems to work but I wonder if this is the right way??)
