I often use pspad as a text editor. It has some very nice features for an editor (you should check it out).

One of the nice things it has done is integrated php documentation so you can right-click a function and say "show the php doc for this func". This opens the php help (.chm) to the page with that function on it. It's VERY convenient!

did you try to click F1 in PhpED when cursor is under a known php function?
