I have a dev server ( Redhat el4 ) which I connect to via sftp.
I would like to connect to the server, edit the files on the server and debug on the server without having a local copy of the files. I was able to do this with zend studio but it doesn't seem possilble with PhpED. Am I wrong?

Yes, it's possible.
You may want to install Samba on the server, bind its daemon listening socket onto 127.0.0.1 (for the sake of security), run ssh and establish port forwarding from the server TCP/127.0.0.1:139 to a local loopback adapter and work with remote files as local ones. It takes 1-2 minutes to setup (or may be 20-30min for the first time)
