I would suggest to implement something like Eclipse does for the autoclose-bracket:

1) if you type in (, [, or { autoclose the bracket if and only if there is a blank space after the cursor.
2) after the autoclose of the bracket if the user types in another closed bracket don't write this second bracket, just overwrite the autoclosed one (this is very very usefull)

I think the same could apply to ' and "

maybe you could enable 1 and 2 with a special setting.
