<style> tag problem

I am evaluating phped version 4.5 and I run into a problem. If I have this in my code:
<html>
<head>
<title>Page title</title>
<style type="text/css">
.style1 {
background-color:#CCCCCC;
width: 450px;
color: #0000FF;
}
(more styles)
</style>
</head>
( rest of the page continues...)

The problem is that everything after </style> will not take the color code anymore, it doesn't matter if it is php or html. Everything else is just with color black. But if I remove the <style part it works again. Why does this happen? Can it be fixed? That's an inconvenient because I can't not see my php code in the rest of the page or the html ...
